Associated with whiny, nasal voices over a few power chords, pop punk can sometimes get a bad rep. However, the oldies are the goodies & 11 albums deep into their career, Bowling for Soup opt for the ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach, and it pays off in spades. Never straying too far from their sound, Drunk Dynasty is BFS at their best.
Opening with ‘She Used To Be Mine’ & ‘Shit to Do’ the humorous & sometimes bittersweet lyrics result in 2 of the strongest tracks of their career.
Album highlight, however, comes in the form of the scathing ‘Don’t Be A Dick’. A ferocious attack on the assholes of the world boasting a huge chorus & a lesson a few people could learn from.
Given the bands future once seemed uncertain, declaring that they would no longer be touring the UK, it’s great to see them return on such a strong form. Whilst it’s unlikely to set the world on fire, you’d struggle to find a more solid pop punk release this year. Long may Bowling for Soup continue.
